Seeing God at Work: A Nightly Rhythm and Recourse for Families

Updated: Aug 11

As a new school year begins, many of us are walking alongside our students as they adjust to fresh routines, growing responsibilities, and shifting relationships. It’s a season full of energy and emotion - excitement, uncertainty, and new beginnings - and it also opens the door for meaningful conversations about the Gospel and matters of faith to take root in our homes.

In our family, we’ve built a simple nightly rhythm that helps anchor our hearts. We call it “M.R.” (short for Muck Reflection). Each night, we:

  1. Read the Bible together (about a chapter a night).

  2. Ask three questions (more on those in a second).

  3. Pray together (usually I lead).

  4. Sing one verse from a hymn (yes, like in a hymnal).

The three questions we ask every night are:

  • What was the best part of your day?

  • Where or how did you see God at work today?

  • What’s a prayer request you have for tomorrow?

That second question? It’s usually the hardest to answer - for our kids and for us. I think it’s because we sometimes expect to see God in big, dramatic moments - miracles, life-changing events, or sudden breakthroughs - when in reality, He’s often moving in the quiet, everyday moments we might overlook.

To help with that, we keep a list of prompts in our Bible (and on the bathroom door, so the kids see it when they brush their teeth). It helps us notice the subtle but powerful ways God works:

  • Through People – Did someone encourage or help you today? Did you get to do that for someone else?

  • Through Provision – Was a need met? Did something work out better than expected?

  • Through Peace or Protection – Did you feel calm in a stressful moment? Did you make it through something hard?

  • Through Truth – Did a Bible verse or something you learned stick with you today?

  • Through Opportunities – Did you get to do the right thing, share your faith, or serve someone?

  • Through Answered Prayer – Did you see a prayer (big or small) answered today?

  • Through Creation or Beauty – Did you notice something beautiful, creative, or awe-inspiring?

  • Through Conviction or Growth – Did you feel challenged to do better or make something right?

Even just one of these can spark a conversation that reminds our kids (and us) that God is always present, always active, and always good - even in the ordinary and mundane.

God can use this routine to mature us and our children’s faith - to give us moments of transformation in the routines and rhythms of our homes. Whether your kids are starting school today or in a few weeks, remember - you don’t have to have all the answers. Just keep asking the questions that matter.
