The Chase of the Heart

ree

We’ve moved from simple enjoyment to subtle enslavement - and many haven’t noticed.

The shift didn’t happen overnight. First, culture moved slowly: singles instead of albums, hookups instead of courtship, clickbait instead of newspapers. Then came modern speed: everything faster, yet still with some substance. We live in what's called a dopamine culture.

We don’t just watch sports; we gamble on them. We don’t listen to songs; we scroll through seconds-long clips. We don’t court people; we swipe profiles like slot machine levers.

The companies behind these platforms are not evil in intent - they are economic. Facebook began as a way to connect friends. Instagram began as photo sharing. But algorithms have discovered a powerful truth: addiction is more profitable than entertainment.

As Paul warns, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2). We can see this principle applied today: our attention is under siege, and many of us follow it compulsively, not thoughtfully.

When we mindlessly scroll or chase fleeting pleasures, we are reminded that the heart is deceitful above all things (Jeremiah 17:9). Our Creator designed us for worship, rest, and meaningful relationship - not for endless digital distractions that steal our joy and focus.

These platforms don’t care if you’re fulfilled, educated, or truly connected. They care about your attention because that is their currency. And yet, God calls us to steward every gift He has given - including our time and focus (Ephesians 5:15–16).

The first step to freedom is recognizing the trap. Pause when your fingers reach for the screen. Ask yourself: Am I choosing this, or is something else controlling me?

Jesus said, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). Let us choose what aligns with Christ. Let our attention, our hearts, and our desires be guided by Him. For in Him, we find fulfillment that no fleeting pleasure can ever match.

Your attention is your most valuable resource. Guard it. Offer it to God. Live in the freedom He provides.
