The One Thing You Can’t Afford to Live Without

ree

There is a single request every follower of Jesus must learn to pray - consistently, humbly, and urgently:

Lord, give me wisdom.

Wisdom is more than information. It’s more than intelligence, experience, or even good intentions. Biblical wisdom is the God-given ability to discern what truly matters and what doesn’t, what matters more and what matters less. It is heaven’s perspective applied to earth’s realities. It is the difference between a life of meaningful impact and one drained by meaninglessness.

Brant Hansen puts it this way in The Men We Need:“Wisdom means knowing what matters and what doesn’t, or what matters more and what matters less. You don’t want to go through life without it.” He’s right. Scripture affirms this again and again.

Why Wisdom Matters So Much

The book of Proverbs tells us, “Wisdom is the beginning of wisdom; get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight” (Prov. 4:7). In other words - make wisdom your top pursuit. Because without it, the blessings God intends for your life often get lost in noise, distraction, or foolish choices.

Wisdom helps you:

  • recognize the difference between the urgent and the important

  • choose integrity when compromise looks easier

  • lead your family with conviction instead of confusion

  • pursue what lasts instead of what fades

  • walk faithfully in a world that constantly pulls you in the wrong direction

Every area of life - marriage, parenting, work, friendships, leadership, habits, decisions—rises or falls here.

Wisdom Comes to Those Who Ask

The good news is that God doesn’t merely encourage us to seek wisdom—He promises to give it.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5

God isn’t stingy with wisdom. He is generous. But He gives it to those who ask, those who acknowledge they cannot navigate life on their own. True wisdom begins when we take the posture of Solomon and pray: “I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in” (1 Kings 3:7).

Humility opens the door to clarity.

The World Doesn’t Need More Noise - It Needs Wise Christians

In a culture full of information but starving for wisdom, God calls His people to be different. Not louder, but wiser. Not more opinionated, but more discerning. Not reactionary, but rooted.

Whether you’re a husband, wife, student, parent, leader, or new believer - your life will rise or fall on this simple decision:

Will you ask God for wisdom today?

A Simple Prayer for Today

Lord, teach me what matters and what doesn’t. Show me what to hold onto and what to release. Give me a heart that loves Your ways. Make me wise according to Your Word, so that my life points others to You. Amen.
