When we open our Bibles, we often read “God” and “LORD” almost interchangeably. But Scripture uses these words with intentionality. Understanding the difference matures our worship and shapes our daily walk with Christ.
The Names in Scripture
GOD - The word “God” in our English Bibles usually translates the Hebrew word Elohim. This name highlights God’s power as Creator and Sovereign over all things. Genesis 1 begins with it: “In the beginning, God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth.”
The Focus: His might, majesty, and universal rule.
The Takeaway: He is not a tribal deity or personal invention; He is the one true God over the entire universe.
LORD - When you see LORD in all capital letters, it translates YHWH (Yahweh), God’s covenant name revealed to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:14). It’s the personal name of the God who saves, the “I AM WHO I AM.”
The Focus: His covenant love and faithfulness to His people.
The Takeaway: He is not just “the God out there” but “the Lord who is near,” who enters into relationship with His people.
Biblical Examples
Creation & Covenant: Genesis 1 uses Elohim as God creates. Genesis 2 introduces YHWH Elohim as He forms Adam and Eve and walks with them. God is not only powerful but personal.
Psalms: “The LORD is my shepherd” (Psalm 23:1) emphasizes the covenant-keeping God who cares for His flock.
Prophets: When the prophets say “declares the LORD,” they remind Israel that the God of relationship is calling them back to faithfulness.
Fulfilled in Christ
Jesus bridges these names perfectly. Colossians 1 declares Him Creator (Elohim). John 8:58 records Him saying, “Before Abraham was, I AM,” directly invoking the covenant name YHWH. The fullness of God’s power and personal presence meets us in Jesus.
Live It Out
Worship: When you praise God’s creative might, you’re acknowledging Elohim. When you thank Him for His steadfast love and forgiveness, you’re responding to YHWH.
Trust: You can rest knowing the One who set galaxies in motion also keeps His promises to you.
Witness: Share not just that “a god” exists but that the LORD invites people into relationship through faith in Jesus Christ.
“God” reminds us of His power and transcendence. “LORD” reminds us of His personal covenant love. Together, they reveal the fullness of the One who is both infinitely mighty and intimately near.
