You Can’t Please Everyone - And That’s Okay

ree

One of the hardest realities in life is realizing that no matter what we do, we can’t please everyone. The Apostle Paul faced this truth firsthand. He wrote in Galatians 1:10, “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

God calls us to live for His approval first, not the applause - or criticism - of others. Seeking everyone’s approval can lead to compromise, distraction, and even disobedience to God.

How can we overcome the desire to please everyone? Here are some practical, biblical steps:

  1. Focus on God’s Approval – Colossians 3:23 reminds us, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” Daily ask, “Am I doing this to honor God, or to gain the favor of others?”

  2. Set Healthy Boundaries – Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” It’s okay to say no when requests or expectations compromise your time, energy, or spiritual walk.

  3. Remember Everyone Will Disagree Sometimes – Even Jesus faced criticism. John 7:7 notes, “The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.” If you’re living faithfully, you won’t always be popular—and that’s okay.

  4. Seek Wise Counsel – Surround yourself with trusted brothers and sisters in Christ who can speak truth in love (Proverbs 11:14). They help you discern when feedback is constructive versus when it’s merely people-pleasing pressure.

  5. Keep an Eternal Perspective – 2 Corinthians 4:18 encourages us, “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” Ultimately, God’s opinion is what matters most.

Pleasing God over people isn’t always easy, but it is freeing. Let go of the burden of universal approval and step confidently into the life He’s called you to live.
