Ask for Wisdom, Ask for Jesus

ree

In James 1:5, we are told, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” At first glance, this verse seems straightforward - a simple encouragement to pray for wisdom. But when we dig deeper, we discover something profoundly beautiful: whenever we ask for wisdom, we are ultimately asking for Jesus.

Jesus is the Source of True Wisdom

The Bible repeatedly points us to Christ as the embodiment of wisdom. In 1 Corinthians 1:30, Paul writes, “And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption.” This tells us that wisdom is not just about making clever decisions or solving problems efficiently. True wisdom - Godly wisdom - is found in knowing and following Jesus.

When we pray for wisdom, we are acknowledging our need for Him to guide our thoughts, choices, and actions. We are saying, in effect, “Lord, let Your mind be in me; let Your understanding shape my steps.”

Asking for Wisdom is Asking for Christ’s Guidance

Jesus promised in John 14:26 that the Holy Spirit would teach us all things and bring to remembrance everything He has said. When we seek wisdom, we are not just looking for good advice - we are seeking the Spirit’s guidance, which leads us into the knowledge of Christ. Every wise decision made by a believer flows from His presence within us.

This is why Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Leaning on God’s wisdom means leaning on Jesus Himself. He is the road, the compass, and the destination of true understanding.

Wisdom in Action is Christlike Living

When we receive wisdom from God, it transforms our lives, our relationships, and our witness. James 3:17 describes it as “first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” Notice that these qualities are the very character of Christ. Asking for wisdom is, in essence, asking for Jesus to shape our hearts to look like His, think like His, and act like Him in the world.

A Daily Invitation

Every day, we are faced with decisions that shape our character, influence our families, and impact our communities. When we feel uncertain, overwhelmed, or unqualified, James 1:5 reminds us to turn to God in prayer. And in doing so, we are not simply asking for knowledge or clever solutions - we are asking for Jesus Himself. He is the wisdom that sustains us, the insight that illuminates our path, and the Spirit that empowers us to act rightly.

So next time you pray for wisdom, remember: it’s never just about the answer you seek. It’s about the One you seek. It’s about Jesus. And He is enough.
