What Have I Been Reading?

One of the questions I get asked fairly often is, "What are you reading?" Here are a few books I've been working through over the past month, along with some brief thoughts on each.

Fiction*

  • Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger // I found William Kent Krueger from a reddit reading group and have become a fan. This endeavor gives some insight to how people grieve.

  • This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger // In my opinion this is better than "Ordinary Grace." It takes a massive turn in the middle, speaking to themes of what kids deal with and overcoming obstacles.

  • The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles // Not as good as Krueger but good regardless. Loved how it was written from multiple perspectives and talked about caring for people who are seeking to crush you.

*I read as much fiction as I can in the summer to give my mind a "rest" from extensive Biblical study and educational material that transpires in the Fall, Winter, and Spring season. The titles above are "non-Christian." I love a good story!

Nonfiction

  • Churn: The Tension That Divides Us and How to Overcome It by Claude Steele // Just started this so can't say "yay" or "nah" just yet. The book talks about mental agitation and physical stress we can experience in diverse settings in everyday life. Steele is not a believer but he has me thinking for sure!

NOTE: I don't recommend everything equally. Some resources have become staples that I enthusiastically place into the hands of others. Some are helpful with discernment. Others simply sparked reflection or conversation. My goal isn't to offer a list of perfect resources but to share what's currently shaping my thinking, ministry, and conversations.
